Etceteras: sugar scrub and pretty packaging #prettypackaging

homework: today's assignment - be inspired {creative inspiration for home and life}: Etceteras: sugar scrub and pretty packaging

I know there have been many wonderful sugar scrub posts and tutorials in the blog world but when I found these little bottles I just had to make some of my own. The little travel-sized bottles are from my local drugstore. I found them on sale - I think they were two for $1.00. There’s a variety of sugar scrub recipes available online – brown sugar, lemon, peppermint and more. I used a recipe from The Happy Housewife because I wanted pink scrub. Here’s the recipe: ¾ cup sugar 1 tablespoon pink sugar crystals 4 tablespoons Canola Oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Mix the sugars together. Slowly pour in the oil and extract and mix together Pour your sugar scrub into your jar. I embellished my jar lids with crepe paper flowers. You can find my tutorial for crepe paper flowers here. If you want to use the scrub as a gift, consider adding a little spoon to scoop out the scrub. I love how these turned out and will definitely be making these as gifts in the future. Since I had all the ingredients out, I decided I also wanted to try making sugar scrub cubes. I thought these might be more convenient since you can use one little cube at a time instead of scooping out the scrub. To make soap or sugar scrub cubes, you need melt and pour soap base which I didn’t have. I found a recipe here that called for soap shreds and decided to give it a try. I have a feeling soap shreds are something you buy to make soap but I used a bar of soap that I had and shredded it. Ta-da...soap shreds... Here's the recipe: 1 Tbsp. oil (I used canola oil) 2 Tbsp. soap shreds (I scraped a bar of soap with a butter knife to make shreds) 3 Tbsp. sugar Heat the oil and soap shreds in the microwave in short bursts. Heat 15 seconds then stir – repeat until the soap is melted. Slowly add your sugar until the mixture is like dough. I added yellow food coloring for a lemon drop effect. At this point you would put your scrub mixture into candy forms. Since I didn’t have candy forms, I used a measuring spoon and scooped out dollops. Let dry on parchment paper until firm. Phew…that was a long post and long day of making sugar scrub and decorating bottles. I’m ready to relax and use my scrub now. Please join me tomorrow for The Inspiration Board Link Party.
